With two wins already under their belt, the Duhawks and Storm squared off on Saturday to wrap-up their four game Iowa Conference series. Friday saw two stellar pitching performances from Adam Schwoebel and Patrick Walsh, with the Duhawks coming out victorious in both. Saturday would seeWill Petrosky and Ben Cottrell toe the rubber in hopes of keeping the winning streak alive.

In game one, Petrosky worked quickly and efficiently, keeping the Simpson batters off balance. The seas became choppy in the top of the third, when Petrosky walked the first two batters. With runners on first and second, Simpson connected for back-to-back singles, making the score 2-0. It looked as if this would be enough for the Storm to claim victory as the Duhawks struggled to put together a comeback. Heading to the bottom of the seventh, Alex Rodriguez singled and advanced to second following a walk to Patrick Walsh. Head Coach Carl Tebon then opted for a pinch runner, sendingNate Even to first to run for Walsh.

With Eric DeSousa up to bat, Rodriguez and Even each advanced on a passed ball. With the tying run only 180 feet away, DeSousa singled to right field, scoring Rodriguez. A second passed ball scored Even with Danny Fahlgren up to bat, tying the game. Then with two outs and runners on first and second, Mike Pudlo hit a long and high fly ball to the gap in left center. Despite pursuit from two Simpson outfielders, the ball could not be caught and Justin Montalvo, who pinch ran for Fahlgren came around from second to score the game winning run.

For the second time in back-to-back days, the Duhawks pulled off late inning heroics, spoiling a potential victory for the Storm.

In game two of the doubleheader, Cottrell took the mound hoping to close out the Storm for a fourth time and complete the weekend sweep. After getting two quick outs in the top of the first, Jake Barr doubled to the left field wall and scored on the following single from Jake Scieszinski. That would be all the offense for the Storm until the 8th inning, as Cottrell found his groove and didn’t let up.

Rodriguez continued his strong hitting performance in the bottom of the second, when he went yard off of Eric Jones. The solo shot was his first of the year, and second in two days for the Duhawks. Loras would add another run to take the lead in the third with Mark Jablonski scoring on a single by Mike Canevello.

In the fourth, Rodriguez was productive again, getting on base with a hit-by-pitch, and then advancing to third on a passed ball. He later scored on another passed ball, increasing the lead to 3-1. It looked as though Loras had the sweep in sights heading into the bottom of the eighth, but Ethan Hale singled for Simpson and would come around to score, cutting the lead to 4-2.

DeSousa would score in the bottom of the eighth for Loras on a single by Jablonski, making the lead 5-2. In the top of the ninth, Jeremy Gerardy would throw his second inning of relief work to earn his second save of the year, and sealing the victory for the Duhawks.

With the two wins today, it marks the first ever four-game sweep in Loras College Baseball history. Loras moves to 6-0 in the Iowa Conference and will host the first two games of a four-game split series against crosstown rivals, University of Dubuque Spartans. Tuesday will also be the annual “Prescott” game, where students from Prescott Elementary will be featured in between games. The Loras Baseball team partners with students and spend time in the offseason mentoring them and helping them in school.

After kicking off the Iowa Conference season this past Monday against Central College, the Duhawks opened up their four game series against the Simpson College Storm Friday night at Petrakis Park. Loras was hoping to bounce back from a tough mid-week loss to Cornell, a game in which they lost 17-6. Head Coach Carl Tebon sent sophomore Adam Schwoebel out to the mound to pitch the first game of the doubleheader on Friday.

Schwoebel started off the first giving up back to back singles, but would reel it in and shut down the Storm without allowing any further damage. In the bottom of the first, Loras got right to work, with senior Mike Canevello singling up the middle. Freshman Patrick Walsh moved Canevello over to third with his single, and Alex Rodriguez came up with a clutch two-out single to bring Canevello home for the first run of the ball game.

Simpson would not tally until the top of the third, when leadoff hitter Jake Barr singled to left-center, followed up by Tyler Crandell reaching base by way of a hit-by-pitch. Five-hole hitter Jake Scieszinski knocked in two runs with his single up the middle, allowing Simpson to take the 2-1 lead. Simpson would add to their lead in the top of the fifth, when Crandell and Tyler Craig combined for back-to-back doubles.

Getting the start in right field, freshman Justin Montalvo reached base on an error by Crandell, which led to a two run inning thanks to a single from Canevello and a sacrifice fly from Jordan Ries.

With the score tied at three, the two teams went to extra innings. A walk by Walsh got the Duhawks in business in the bottom of the 8th. Sophomore Nate Even came into the game as a pinch-runner, and wasted no time advancing to second base on a stolen base. Then after a flyout to the shortstop, juniorEric DeSousa came to the plate and blooped a single into center field, scoring Even from second base, and taking the victory in extra-innings. Schwoebel went the distance, earning the victory for the Duhawks.

In the nightcap, it would be Walsh who toed the rubber for Tebon & Co. After an impressive showing during their spring trip to Florida, Walsh would put on a display over his seven innings that prevented Simpson from ever gaining an edge. Both teams displayed prime pitching and tough defense throughout most of the game, but it would be the bottom of the fifth that pushed Loras out in front, giving them a lead that they would not relinquish.

Montalvo and junior Mark Jablonski would both earn walks in the bottom of the fifth, bringing juniorMike Pudlo up to bat. Pudlo hit a hard ground ball past the third baseman, driving in Montalvo and breaking the scoreless tie. Canevello would follow that up with a double to the wall in left, bringing home Jablonski. Ries hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Pudlo from third. Senior Cody Richterrounded out the scoring, lacing a single to left field, driving in Canevello.

The four runs would be more than enough for Walsh, as he remained nearly unhittable all night long. For good measure, Jablonski went yard in the bottom of the sixth, driving in two more runs. Going into the top of the seventh, Walsh had a no-hitter in tact, but back-to-back one out singles broke up the no-hit bid. Walsh ended the night with 11 strikeouts, a shutout, and the second complete game of the day for the Duhawks.

“First varsity win as a pitcher feels great. I gotta give a shoutout to my fielders, they [Simpson] could have had plenty more hits than that. It was a great team win,” Walsh said.

For Walsh, the win is certainly impressive and proves to the conference that Loras is not a team to be taken lightly. But even more impressive is the fact that Walsh is a freshman, and this kind of performance could become a regular occurrence over his next four seasons.

“I hope its something we can get accustomed to. Normally its not eleven, but I still get a good amount of strikeouts. I’ll take eleven whenever.”

The Duhawks return to the diamond tomorrow as they’ll finish up the four game series against Simpson with another doubleheader, with first pitch scheduled for 1:00pm.

One evening, when I was enjoying a cigar while on my Christmas vacation, I was struck with an idea and a plan on how to create a cigar website where my friends and I could review the different cigars we were smoking. Over the course of a week, the concept was developed along with a full “corporate design” including, fonts, logo, colors, and website.

Long term, the site has goals of connecting with cigar manufacturer’s to better promote and educate new smokers of the world of cigars.

After defeating UW-Platteville on Saturday night, the Duhawks returned to the Rock Bowl on Saturday to take on the Wheaton College Thunder for the Elite 8, and the chance to play in the Final Four in San Antonio, Texas. These two clubs met in the regular season, with Loras coming out on top 2-0. However, when you’re playing soccer on November 17, the stakes are much higher, and both teams were aware of this.

Loras got off to a hot start, with sophomore Johnny Rummelhart capitalizing on an early corner kick. For the second time in the NCAA Division III Championships, Rummelhart springboarded his way up into the cool Dubuque air to win a header and punch it into the back of the net. Loras used their speed and intensity to pressure every man on the pitch, and playing with the 1-0 lead certainly worked to their advantage.

Through 45 minutes of play, Wheaton held a significant shot advantage and corner kick advantage, but some unbelievable saves by the one and only Dylan Milkent kept the Thunder at a minimum and off the scoreboard.

Following a throw in from Sam Koenig, senior Forrest Olson and freshman JoJo Schmidt applied ruthless pressure in the corner, eventually forcing the ball to pop out at which point Schmidt took a light touch and sent it soaring to the far post where junior Erik Berkowitz was ready to pounce. Berkowitz took to the air and headed the cross past the Wheaton keeper.

With pandemonium exploding in the stands and on the pitch, the Duhawks found themselves up 2-0 with less than 30 minutes remaining in the match. They were fully aware, however, that in this wonderful game of soccer, anything can happen, especially when a team’s season is on the line.

Wheaton did everything they could to bring the match back to even ground, but captain Dan Figura and company were up to the task of protecting the lead and securing the win. Wheaton did cut the lead in half in the 88th minute, but that would be all they could muster.

As the clock ticked down to zero, the Duhawk fans and faithful erupted in a cheer like no other. For the first time since 2008, the Loras College Duhawks advance to the Final Four and will await the winner of tomorrow’s match between Scranton and Messiah.

For now, they can celebrate and enjoy the win, but every single one of them will not be satisfied unless they add two more wins in 2012 and bring home the National Championship.

A cool night in the Rock Bowl would be the setting for Tuesday night’s match up between the 4th ranked Loras College Duhawks and the University of Dubuque Spartans. With UD’s loss to Coe last week, the best outcome they could hope for would be to earn a share of the 2012 Iowa Conference Men’s Regular Season title by knocking off the Duhawks. With conference leading goal scorer Nick McDonald, the Spartans planned to utilize his speed and offensive prowess to carry them to victory. Too bad Erik Berkowitz was ready to spoil their plans.

From the opening whistle, McDonald tried to beat Berkowitz off the edge, but the gritty defender wouldn’t abandon his mark. He was so effective with his defense, that McDonald did not register a shot on target all night long. The stifling defense of the Duhawks would prove to be effective once more, as they would finish the Iowa Conference regular season without surrendering a single goal.

After a scoreless first half, Loras Head Coach Dan Rothert spoke to his team at the halftime break, instructing them to continue to play high pressure and eventually they will wear down the UD front. Sophomore Tom Fluegel found himself in prime scoring position in the 55th minute and did not miss, sending home the shot from inside the 6.

Senior Forrest Olson and freshman Ben Avery just missed connecting on a low crossing attempt in the first half, but when given the opportunity again, Olson was sure not to miss it. Olson and senior Ryan Schneider, both graduates of Marist High School, would connect in the 76th minute to squelch the Spartans efforts to rob the Duhawks of the Iowa Conference title.

Loras completes their regular season in stunning fashion. In Iowa Conference play, the Duhawks failed to surrender a goal, thus owning a +27 goal differential. The Duhawks are the second team to complete this feat, second only to the 2011 regular season champion Luther.

The Duhawks will be off until October 31, where at that time they will battle it out against the winner of the Luther and Central match this Saturday.

Many days ago, 104 to be exact, the 2012 season officially started with 58 student-athletes in camp fighting for a spot on the Duhawks varsity roster.

Following a shocking exit from the NCAA Tournament in 2011, there was a sense of hunger and desire to make the outcome in 2012 different. Led by Captain Dan Figura, the Duhawks pushed their way through the two-a-days and six-packs to make it to opening night.

Six different freshmen would earn playing time in the match against Bethel, only a sign of things to come and the contributions that would be made from every single player on the roster.

Today, we stand anxiously awaiting the 26th game of the season, with the hopes that the 24th team victory is on the horizon. In what might be one of the most anticipated matches in Loras Athletics history, they will take on the No. 1-ranked Messiah College Falcons, winners in six of the last ten National Championships and a team that constantly finds themselves in the top five in the rankings.

None of that matters now.

Friday, at 11 a.m., the teams will take the pitch for the National Semifinal match and the chance to play for the National Championship. At the sound of the whistle, nothing prior to game including predictions or performance will matter at that point.

The only thing that the Duhawks need to focus on is playing the game of soccer, something that each player has done for more than half of their lives.

These twenty-four young men have an opportunity to make history at Loras College. No team has ever won a NCAA National Championship, clearly showing the level of difficulty that an achievement like it entails.
With two more wins, this team can make history and prove to everyone that they are the best team in the NCAA.

Once the clock starts running, there is very little that Coach Dan Rothert will be able to control. He has done his job preparing these young men for this battle of epic proportions. The will to complete the task at hand is now on the team to ensure that the Duhawk flies higher than it ever has before.

Individual efforts tend to shine the brightest in games that have as much on the line as this one possesses; that will push a team over the edge and onto the next round.

Will Dylan Milkent come up with a leaping save to preserve the win? Will Johnny Rummelhart catapult himself into the air to head in a Kevin Cavers corner kick? Will Brad Joiner notch his first career NCAA Tournament goal and propel the Duhawks to victory? Only time will tell.

For the seniors, they have to ask themselves, ‘What will your verse be?’ What do they want to be remembered by in 25 years when they have beards full of grey and knees that are sore from the countless sprints during their soccer careers?

November 30, 2012, will be a day that these men will never forget and a cornerstone for the future of this Loras College Soccer program.

The day is yours for the taking Duhawks. Seize it.
